"Life of 'AU' – Autism & Me" explores the unique perspectives and experiences of autistic individuals. It emphasizes that autism is a natural part of a person’s identity, not a flaw or defect. The video highlights the beauty of neurodiversity, the challenges of masking, the importance of routines, and the power of acceptance. Through vibrant creativity and diverse abilities, autistic people offer new ways of seeing the world.
This video resource was developed by young people with autism as part of a therapeutic support group in one of Enable Ireland's disability teams. Thanks to the participants of the "Autism + Me" group and the psychology department who led and facilitated this group, for their wonderful work.
A key ingredient to the therapeutic group was for the young participants to develop a script and storyboard capturing how they would describe their autism and what they would like to tell others about it. The creation of a script, visuals and images to go along with it, meant they were able to express themselves via visual storytelling and to explore their own thoughts on autism more closely in a creative, fun way. We hope this resource will be useful to others, too.
